Very interesting perspective from Tom Chatfield on computer gaming as an extreme form of digital engagement of human senses. I agree very much with the ideas he characterises in his TED talk. check out the video.
” today people spend 8 billion dollars buying virtual things ”
“A virtual asteroid was sold for a real sum of 3032 US dollars ”
The video is a masterclass thesis of gamification with key learning on gaming but these are also drivers of what Ive seen in digital ecosystem research. Point 5 is a key thing in visualization and feedback and environmental sustainability. He makes this point for metering in sustainability education be better feedback and reward systems. Tom also identified research on memory and reward in cognitive science which is a key to stimulating individual and group reward stimulus systems.
“player developed self enforcing voluntary currency – incredibly sophisticated player behavior ”
“evolving unprecedented cooperative behavior”
experience bars measuring progress
multiple long and short term aims
Rewards effort
Rapid, frequent and clear feedback
An element of uncertainty
