My podcast "Growing the UK AI and Data-Driven Economy" 30 April 2018 IPT HoC Event

It has been estimated that AI could add an additional £232bn to the UK economy by 2030. Many people in the UK now rely heavily on use of technology as part of their daily routine and the increased use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the scope to bring major social and economic benefits to the UK. AI technologies are being used to transform business models across many sectors, offering improvements in efficiency and performance, from drug discovery to logistics.

On Monday 30 April 2018, the IPT hosted a dinner discussion looking at Growing the UK AI and Data-Driven Economy. Held in the House of Commons, the event was chaired by The Lord Clement-Jones CBE, Chair of theHouse of Lords’ Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence. Lord Clement-Jones was joined by speakers Professor Mark Skilton, Professor of Practice in Information Systems and Management at theUniversity of Warwick, Dr Adrian Weller, Programme Director for Artificial Intelligence at the The Alan Turing Institute and Ved Sen, Digital Evangelist at Tata Consultancy Services. Prior to the discussion the IPT had the opportunity to interview Mark and Adrian to explore some of the challenges and opportunities facing AI in the UK. A summary of the points discussed include:

• The differences in the nature of human behaviour and Artificial Intelligence

• The challenges and development of data insights, knowledge agents, robotics, supply chain management and predictive maintenance

• The risks of AI errors potentially causing harm to humans and subsequent legal uncertainty through issues such as data accessibility, data quality, algorithm influence and technological enfeeblement

• The potential of AI to create significant increases in efficiency and productivity and to support services struggling under population pressures

• A fostering of digital skills and the role of the UK in being an inclusive society.
