The development of AI assistance on google maps or other onboard navigation is exploiting the details 3D map data to improved guidance and location services. We already can see traffic congestion, speed cameras and place recommendations as standard services.
This Police traffic monitoring system patent moved the bar higher in intelligent traffic control automation. The ability to “see over the horizon” with connected technology from police car to speed cameras making the car a mobile scanner and response center significantly raises the stakes and abilities to track and respond to traffic violations when even not in the location physically. Hiding behind trees and other clandestine automated behavior only triggers thoughts of satnav manufacturers building responses to this with “police location awareness” services to fight back to another form of surveillance while not condoning speeding.
I can see civil liberties groups reacting badly to police gaining control of vehicles with automated control systems, which in the case of terrorism recent attacks would be an obvious benefit; it is also another concern of governance and policy for the AI society that is rapidly approaching now.
